Wouldn’t it be great if we could get our carpets professionally cleaned after every spill, stain, or accident? Unfortunately, most of us do not have the extra time or money to spend on an “on-call” carpet cleaner. So, how to do you clean up after a spill and keep your carpets looking clean between professional cleanings? Not to worry! We have a few simple DIY tricks and tips that will help keep those pesky stains and disastrous accidents from ruining your day and your carpet.
Grease doesn’t stand a chance
Grease is a tricky substance to remove from carpets. Thankfully, there’s an easy solution…dishwashing solution! Find a dishwashing soap with a grease-cutting formula, like Dawn or Joy. Mix a cup of water with a few drops of soap and pour into a spray bottle. Spray the stain and then blot it. Repeat this process until the grease is gone.
Wax on, wax off
It’s getting colder and everyone is anxious to break out their scented holiday candles. While candles add a wonderful smell and cozy feeling on cool nights, getting candle wax on the carpet is not a peaceful experience. Wax dries quickly and will immediate stick to your carpet fibers. The easiest way to remove the wax is to reheat it. Place a white washcloth over the wax and a warm iron on top of the cloth. Once the wax has melted again, scrape it off with a butter knife. Place a white paper towel over any remaining wax and carefully place the iron over the paper towel. The remaining wax should adhere to the paper towel. Remember, don’t keep the iron on the carpet for more than 30 seconds at a time or you might risk burning your carpet.
Let it sit
When food, grease, mud, or other stains touch our carpets, our first instinct is to scrub like crazy to get it out. Patience is important when removing a stain. The best way to effectively remove the stain is by blotting it as much as possible and then saturating it with stain remover. Then, let the stain remover work its magic. It will break down the remaining particles, making it easier to remove the stain. Finally, blot the stain until the spot is completely gone.
The Sweet Spot
It’s the holiday season and leftover candy lurks all over your home and office. That sticky stuff can make a real mess in your carpets. Use a butter knife to scrape off the large pieces. Then apply a water/mild soap mixture to the spot. Sugar attracts more dirt. By removing all the sugar, you’re saving yourself and your carpet from future stains. Finally, use a clean cloth to blot the remaining liquid from the carpet.
These are just a few ways to help keep your carpets looking fresh and clean. It’s also important to get your carpets cleaned regularly by a professional carpet cleaner. High traffic areas need extra attention and should be professionally cleaned at least 2-3 times each year. If you’re ready to get your carpets professionally cleaned, contact Baker’s Chem-Dry today!
