Carpets look great after a professional cleaning. The dirt, grime, and odor are gone and you’re left with immaculate, spotless carpets. We all wish they would stay that way forever. Unfortunately, life happens! Your kids throw their wet shoes on the floor. Your dog tracks dirt in from the backyard. Your toddler spills their milk. So, how do you keep your carpets looking like they’ve just been professionally cleaned in-between professional cleanings? It’s not as hard as you may think.
To keep your carpet looking its best, vacuum at least once a week. If you have carpet in a heavy traffic area, it’s best to vacuum at least twice each week. Invest in a high-quality vacuum with a powerful suction and rotating brush. Vacuums with HEPA filters also help fight mold, allergens and germs. It’s important to keep your vacuum clean and change the bag/container regularly. It doesn’t work efficiently when it gets overly full. In addition to regular vacuuming, the tips below will not only extend the life of your carpet, but keep it looking clean months after it has been professionally cleaned.
- Be a shoe-free household. This means you take off your shoes at the door and ask guests to take their shoes off as well. Not only will this help you protect your carpet fibers, you will also bring less contaminants and dirt into the house. Reduce shoe clutter by simply creating a shoe “nook” or providing a bin near your door to neatly store your family and guest’s shoes.
- Add indoor and outdoor rugs and mats. When you place one rug outside an entrance and one inside an entrance, you now have two areas that will collect dirt and grime before it hits your carpet. These rugs also help prevent moisture from entering your home and seeping into your carpets. Small rugs are easily cleaned by either shaking or washing them. They are also significantly cheaper to replace than carpets when they become old and dirty.
- Switch things around occasionally. Rearranging a room allows new paths to form in the carpets. If you have the same paths for an extended period of time, your carpets will look dull, even when they are clean.
- Invest in furniture coasters and protective mats for areas under computer desk chairs or heavy furniture. This will help prevent extensive wear and tear on your carpets.
- Fight stains immediately. If a spill occurs on your carpet, clean it up immediately. You have a better chance of getting the stain out if you attack it right away. Stains should be treated with gentle and mild solution first. For persistent stains, you may have to use harsher solutions. Always blot a stain. Do not rub it!
